How can faculty foster enthusiasm in the dreaded English composition course? By having students write about their bliss. Based on Joseph Campbell's theory of "follow your bliss,” students first identify what brings them the most happiness in life, and then they explore their “bliss topic” in five patterns of development. Students demonstrate more enthusiasm and a higher level of ethos in their writing when they are already passionate about the topic.
